hunted for 25 years, still things come up- very deep indeed-(6-8''). this is 1.2'' long, heavy, primitive and surely a 'whatzit'. I think it is an eagle motif. I thought it was made of lead but is not soft enough, of silvery grey metal, once mounted on a 5/8th piece of wood. Could it have been an end to a ram rod? My house was built in 1860 along a 'First Nation's' path that crossed the creek below my house. Sullivan's army had passed through this area and I have found Spanish Silver in the woods around the surrounding area.
Any ideas of what it might be???

Hello Neighbor......Cool looking. Definitely a finial of some sort.... Are you still looking for Sullivan's payroll too? :)

Hard to imagine it on a ram rod what about a swagger stick?

not the whole payroll, just his 3 pounder that was rumored to be buried on the trail around Lodi somewhere--
---could be a swagger stick, it could also look like a Mayan serpent, could be 'home made'--
