Hey all,

Hoping you pros out there can help me identify this rock/mineral
that my 16 yo. grandson was given for his collection.

It's roughly 5" across, and aside from the images (I didn't take the
pics) that's about all I have to go on. I haven't physically seen it,
and no idea of it's origin. Looks almost to have carbon colored crystals.

Pictures are a little to blurry to get a good close look at the black mineral but maybe its manganese or geothite, it could even be pyrolusite sprays maybe which is a manganese dioxide, someone else might know by the first pic, it's pretty clear, see if your grandson can get a streak color, that will help narrow it down. Either way tell your grandson he's got a really cool specimen there. :icon_thumright:

Thanks Steve...I'll see if he can bring it up next time his family
visits. He'll be thrilled to know what it actually is, and I'll pass along
your "possible" id's.

If I can get my hands on it, I'll get some better pics with my Nikon.
