This object is made of brass. Dug from site of house built in early 1800s. The same site has given up many flat buttons dating up to 1850 or so. First photo is what I'll call front because the tooled end is concave and seems that my thumb fits perfectly into the concave. The forked end has a pin through the end like it was meant to pivot. Is it part of a latch of some kind? There are no markings or lettering of any kind.
