From 1851 drawing & site today and what gold the miners missed
Hi all, Spring is finally here and i went out too the old gold digging in Sailors Gully. I have an old drawings book from the gold rush days . Found a picture of the Sailors Gully in 1851. Quite a likeness to the site i hunted today. First pic the old drawing and second the site i hunted.
The ground warms up and ground mineralization is more active. There are huge areas of junk targets which is mostly mining junk from the later hard rock mines. So i decided to keep working threw the oldest section. The area of the creek flats. The gold miners on the creek flat dug shallow mines chasing ancient creek bed or shallow leads. Most of the gold pieces found are at depth in the tailing heaps around the shallow lead shafts. Gold has a sound all of its own even in heavy hot rock areas. I use the Md that is suited for these conditions. Gpx 4500 with a 12 inch mono coil. I give up depth for more sen. In 3 trips which covered 16 hours i managed just over an oz of near pure gold.
