I went out with Megalodon and Tommybuckets during the nor' easter today. We were on the beaches, two different ones, for about 5 hours. It was a tough go for sure. We were looking for shipwreck coins, modern jewelry, and coins.

It was a tough go! I found one British halfpenny, it was almost on top of the sand! Not the first time that had happened. A couple hours later I wandered semi close to the spot I found it and got a screamer of a signal. It read 88 on the Deus. I was puzzled as to the tone of the machine, as something around 88 is a lot of times a big wad of heavy aluminum. I got my scoop out and pounced.

In the scoop was what looked like a piece of flattened chewing gum. Like what? I got it out and saw some degradation to the metal, and determined it was made of copper. I thought at first it was perhaps a misshapen broken half cent, but it was too thick. Then I thought it was a piece to one of the WWII artillery shells that get found on the beach. After we got it to the truck, I turned the light of my cell on it and could finally see some writing, at least it looked like writing, and a depressed circle with a "VI" in it.

So...what we have is Spanish 6 Maravedis copper cob! This style is most likely from the era of Philip IV. Right now I can't move, almost 10 at night after driving 360 miles and walking miles on the beach...so...I can't tell or see what is on the coin. It will need some serious attention before it will be presentable. I don't know how much of the inscription is still there. The picture I have now just shows "dog food", essentially. I think with the light of day in the am and my optivisor and Andre's pencils, I'll see what she looks like in the am. And THEN both coins will need to be submerged in fresh water for numerous weeks, with water changes to try to get some of the salt out. Doing it right takes awhile.

And the other coin? A mere 1781 Hiberia half cent, George III. Obverse is nice. It apparently had been sitting with the obverse up as the salt water damage is primarily to the back of the coin. It has that great red coloration, and probably has been sitting high in the sand for over 200 years. The ones from down below generally tend to be either thin "razors" or heaving encrusted. This one apparently has been beach tumbled for a bit!

Pics tomorrow when I have enough light to get them. Back in about 1989 or so I found my first Revolutionary War cannon ball on a Friday 13!

EPIC FINDS!
CONGRATS Smokeycat, Tommubuckets & Megalodon!

Wtg Smokey! Glad to see you having fun and saving history. Very cool.

Pictures or it didn't happen :)

:P

Well done Smokey.
Sounds like braving the storm and ignoring the aging process has snagged you another treasure from years and years ago
Congratulations

The aging process is going to happen. And if you can't see the pictures, get glasses or try reading the post again because I have to go buy a new light this morning to get pics, the sun at 10 pm just wasn't working for me. When I turn my light on it smells like smoke. Won't take long, but don't be disappointed in the cob, because its been in the ocean 400 years. My thanks go to Tommy and Meg as I really can't go by myself anymore to a place like this, it just isn't safe to go alone. The park employees told me a couple years ago on average one person a year dies in the park, most times they are too close to the water and a large wave takes them out and they are never seen again. Some years it's crossing the highway when the cars are coming at 70 mph! You should have seen my sorry arse trying to cross the highway quickly. Turtles do better! The cars come so fast that you have to have one at least 1/2 mile away to even try two lanes!

Will have pics soon.

ok, here ya go: (dug these beauties all by myself on this hunt...)

Pretty sure the hinge is from the chest of gold that was just another inch deeper. The heavy chest of gold was left behind to conserve strength needed to dig pull tabs - my Cibola is optimized for pull tab depth...Speaking of which, one of the pull tabs was an early design, likely from Blackbeard's Mountain Dew.

It was great to meet and hunt with smokeythecat and tommybuckets. And yes, smokey is a driving machine. And also yes, that Deus may be the only working example that was used in Jurassic Park, chewed up by a T.rex, coughed up in a prehistoric hairball, re-consumed, excavated from the feces, and then stomped on by a frisky Stegasaurus before it could be cleaned up.

On the serious side, the beach was astonishingly clean with very few signals. I have never had to drop a quarter so often to answer the question "Is this thing on?". Fun day - thank you Smokey and Tommybuckets (now I know about the buckets too...).

So Megs, could you give inquiring minds a BETTER description of my Deus, and how LITTLE it's apparently used? It's still under warranty for 6 more weeks!

That's always been a clean beach. Now I have to find who can fix an Italian architect's lamp!

Would be hilarious to send it back with a note that it works great but the finish isn't holding up so well...

You mean because the foam earpads looked like a doberman chewed them? And there used to be paint on it? And the coil changed its color to the color of reddish dirt? Or because there are actual small dents on it?

IMG_0789.JPG You asked for a premature pic, well here it is! Getting the light fixed and some cleaning will bring out the detail, but we both saw it.

IMG_0784.JPG Second chain I ever found, from a different beach earlier this week. It's a bracelet and tiny.

The ultimate insult was how the lawyers and doctors riding their Harleys on coastal highway beeped at us from so far away like we couldn't get out of their way. And now that we've determined that I'm actually 4 months older than you, I will inquire of the park manager for our AARP discount next time...

Of the ha'pennies I've seen from there, your example is the nicest. The ones I found long ago range from toasted to crusty condition.

That's gonna be a tuff one smokey....half penny is a beaut though. Hope that marvedi gives up some detail. Congrats that is one old coin there !!

I think this one was up in the dunes at one time, the half penny. The reverse is worse, and it looks to have been sandblasted. I'll work on the cob later today. Trying to find lamp replacement parts, but it may be better to get a used one off Ebay and scrounge the parts off it. It's an Artimide Tolomeo from Italy. My daughter bought it for me in Canada, so it's special.

I also had to chuckle at Tommy. He says "there's a wheat penny on the floor back here". On the floorboard of the truck. True. Came from a park LYING ON TOP OF THE GROUND. A 1919 with very readable date. I had just dumped it out of the pouch for this trip! TOP OF THE GROUND.
