French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

I love the days the wife tells me to go hunting! I thought I was hearing things.LOL I called my friend that lives in the village that I have been hunting and we hit a new area.We covered alot of ground and each had dug a couple of things . I found two coins but only one was readable. We started to work our way out of the grassy field and I got an iffy signal and started to dig. The more I dug the better the signal got. I started to get spooked because being in Germany there are a lot of unexploded bombs. At about two and a half feet I saw what I knew was iron. I dug very easily around the metal until I saw that it was round and knew it was not WW1 or WW2. I got it out of the hole and after what seemed like forever got up the hill and to the car. It may be a mortor shell and still have powder in it so I am being gentile with it. I have always dreamed of digging a whole cannon ball and now I have . I am on a lucky streak! I also found a musket ball and a pistol ball. The battle was in 1793 so I would hope the powder would be bad. I hope I can manage to get this thing home to the states. ;D Thanks for looking and happy hunting :)

Thats sweet!! I want one of those, yea right good luck bringing that home. Your lucky getting to hunt out that way. I would like to do that too. If I dug a bomb I would blow myself up because I am very impatient... I guess I would stop and call the bomb squad.

Keep @ it and HH!!

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

If you turn it over to the local police or bomb squad, they will probably just destroy it. See if you can find a local company with the expertise and equipment to "inert" it, once it is certified to be inert, you should be able to bring it into the States.

Do not attempt to do this yourself, the powder can definitely still be good, and is sensitive to heat, spark, and friction. Do not think you can remove or drill out the fuse from one of these crusty old shells without risk of explosion.

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

Bird,

that is nice. Hope it all works out and you get to send it home.

Know anybody with the local E.O.D. outfits,,,,perhaps>>>???

have a good un...........

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

Very nice find! Is it fused? I would have no fear of it discharging somehow as it's been in the ground too long. I gather at least 200+ years old from the Napoleon era? HH, Mike

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

Hey birdman! 8)

You were brave digging that sucker.

I don't envy you getting it back to the states.

Maybe you can find some trusty dude over there who will "disarm" it for you. Maybe somebody here could offer suggestions.

You are really having a ...ah, BALL!

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

I have it soaking in water right now .It was covered in mud so tomarrow I am gonna clean it up. It has alot of corrosion on it ?and the thing is heavy!. It about killed me pulling it out of the hole and walking a couple of hundred yards to the car.LOL It was worth it though.I am not sure if it is fused yet. The battle was French revolution 1793(battle of Morlatern) ,right before Napoleion came on the scene. It lasted three days. The battle site is mostly fields and some woods so there is lots to hunt. I am waiting for a real good snow to come and stay for a while so the grass will get knocked down real nice. ?There are a few people that hunt here but there is lots of land to cover.

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

BIRDMAN, Way to Go, Congrats. Can You See A Fuse ? Hope its Solid that would make things much easier on you. Best of Luck & Good Hunting. trk5capt...

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

Really cool find!!! If you find some one to disarm it, you might want to stand out side while he does or doesn't ;D which ever the case may be. I wonder if you can ship it to yourself. Probably too heavy. But you could be one of the few, if any, that mailed themselves a bomb. WTG!!! HH

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

I would think about your only way to get it out would be to mail it.

After Nam many guys mailed out guns and stuff by packing them into larger items and mailing back home. Pretty darn risky because if you got caught it wouldn't be pretty.

You just have to make darn sure that sucker is disarmed. We don't want to read about how birdman sunk a ship? ;D LOL!

I'm sure there's a way and maybe some buddy can help you out.

If worse came to worse you could saw it up into pieces and mail it out. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

Hey, nice find. You're doing quite well in Germany. I know how it is to ship back to stateside. Maybe you can convince them that it is a paper-weight. Lots of Luck. Again, nice dig.

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

Nice going Bman, I think you will find a lot of great stuff during your detecting career. Tsgman

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

Wow! What a find! :o

You be careful with that thing!

;)

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

I am afraid that if I contact the bomb disposal unit or (EOD) they will use the cannon ball as practice and blow it up.? :'( (They get tired of drills and want to blow something up every now and then.? :o ?)I washed it off today and the thing has a lot of corrosion on it.I could not see a fuse in it but I want to be sure before I start knocking the corrosion off of it.? I will let it soak in water for a few days and try to clean it up again. HH

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

Nice stuff!! It may just be a solid shot with no powder in it, if it does have powder just empty it out and ship it back here! People think powder is over-sensitive, but it only detonates with a charge or something like that, won't detonate from just moving it around. But I wouldn't get it to close to any fire or heat just yet :D Be carefull, hopefully you can get it cleaned up and displayed :)

Re: French /Prussian battle site cannon ball

Well so far I can not find a fuse but still needs a lot of cleaning up. I knocked a good bit of corrosion off of it by lightly scraping it . I have been told that it may have had a wooded fuse also but not sure. If I can ever get this thing looking any better I will post more pics. Thanks for reading and happy hunting. :)
