How do you preserve bone that came out of a river? We very seldom see bone here. Acidic soil eats it up. I've never hunted in water. Maybe some is preserved there? Gary

..there’s several methods of preserving artifacts but for bone I use a solution of Duco glue and Acetone, on porous pieces...small amount of glue for first coat, then continue to increase glue to acetone ratio for the next however many treatments ( play it by ear, each piece is different,....On pieces that you can’t afford to let dry out I use Elmers, just apply a coat or several depending on deterioration...Both of these methods are reversible, although I can’t imagine why you would want to...The basic idea of course is to keep oxygen from destroying the piece,These were the methods river divers used in the 70s, there’s of course different glues on the market now, but my bone looks just like it did 45 years ago when I brought it up from the bottom, hope you find something...Tip:, they’ll most likely be laying in a mud situation..and if they’re not deep enough to fan the bottom, you’ll have to use a screen ( shell mounds included), keep your eyes peeled.

Sad but no more river searching in Florida. Not even if it flows through your own property. Those are awesome pins and the treatment works for the extinct seashells we collect too. They get chalky and brittle so we treat them.

What a great collection that you have H.P., I have really enjoyed and learnt so much just looking at the frames repeatedly-thank you again for sharing it's really appreciated.

This fella from Sarasota found a fully engraved hairpin in the Itch, the best thing he was probably ever gonna find, I said you’d better treat it, a year later we met at St, Leo, I said how come you didn’t bring the pin..He replied, it crumbled.

Before I found out about the duco/actone mix everyone I know was using beeswax....messy...darkens. Was used the same way as the Gomer's Solution but took much longer to soak. I did find out that some of my older "honeyed" pins could be soaked in acetone for a while and repeatedly, then retreated with the duco-acetone mix..

WOW, All i can get out without drooling all over is WOW

I think I heard of gomers from you TC, on a now defunct www. I’ve used on several things it’s easy, fast and not too expensive.

Back to the bone, this is why your collection is so over the top as good as there is.
Your cataloging and record keeping and just you the Man, here to show and answer and explain.
That is what makes it better than the best.
