Great Seal of the U.S. (You're supposed to know this from social studies). Hat badge is probably correct.

Welcome to TNet tmjmccormack! You didn't mention the size of your item, but if the size is correct compared to Mac's post, than that's certainly it. If its smaller, there were other applications for this emblem. Also, the construction of this is curious; in particular I'm noticing the links that hold the segments of this device together. None of my WWII or later devices have these. I know its no older than 1902, when this emblem was adopted by the military, but earlier than WWII is my guess... but I could be wrong :-\ :)

RE: The Size of this item....it's a little bigger than a quarter and about as tall as a book of matches is wide.....I guess it could've been for a cap but there's no pin on the back.

nhbenz: Thanks for your replies! It does seem to be a little more "crude" or simple in design than most of the other cap pins I'm seeing pictures of on the web.

What you may have is the base metal, which most military insignia have... More than likely it was electroplated, and this finish has dissolved over the years...

I'd agree, that very well could be.
