Foundation question

Does anyone know what era and type/reason this type of foundation was used.

I would say it's more of an entrance way than a foundation. Looks like columns and a "gate" would be in between. Are there any iron rivets or latches on them?

I'm pretty sure it's a foundation there's twelve of them set up in a rectangle that's about 15x30

It is probably a raised house foundation. The reason is to get the actual house off the ground for various reasons. By doing this, it creates a small crawlspace underneath which folks used to store items and depending on the type of crawlspace, can house your utilities as well. Not sure how long a raised foundation has been in use but judging from the algae on those concrete piers, I would say those particular ones have been around for a while.

I know of a spot that looks a bit like that... in my case, those pillars were a base for an old ski jump.

I suspect there was an out building on those and not a house. The house had to be close though.

My Grandpa years ago had these supporting a barn and after some one hit and busted one at the corner with a tractor a large boulder was pushed into place. I saw that boulder as a dark gray semi shinny thing I wanted for my rock collection but Dad said Grandpa would not hear of it and I never wanted to upset him as he was my source to many half dollars every time I could visit him.
