Ok so not in a captain Kidd sense but this is the new home to some of my collection. With the weather like it is, I've been determined to find an awesome old box to hold my treasures. This one definitely fit the bill; all square nails, dovetailed corners, original finish, intact lock mechanism (now to just find a skeleton key that fits). It's amazing how hard a box like this is to find. I scoured all antique shops in Cincinnati and if I found a comparable one, it was at least $250+. Any ideas on age or wood type? Also, POST YOUR COOL COLLECTION DISPLAY. With half the country frozen, I know ya got the time to post :tongue3

inside looks like it may be poplar

I can definitely see that chest filling up with coins, rings, chains, and every imaginable kind of precious thing - Nice Find .

A perfect chest for valuable finds!

It's tulip poplar, pre 1900... Nice little box. The lock smith across from the courthouse on main st. Messes with old box locks he maybe able to help with the key. Good luck

Can you already post some pics of the chest with some goodies in it ?

I'm going to make some shelves/ compartments first. They'll just fit the box as I don't want to nail stuff to it. Right now it's just got my silver so far this year. 5 coins in this big box looks pretty pitiful seated and barbers or not lol

Inside the lid there is a hidden compartment. It is filled with twenty dollar gold pieces. You just have to find the secret sliding lock on the side to open it up. Remember that I get half of the treasure because I told you how to open it!

Very nice chest, love the wood. I got a couple moderns chest, just not happy with them....then I worry if someone were to break in, one swoop all could be gone...to do, or not to do...

Sweet. You gonna build some trays to stack in there so you don't have to dig through all the goodies to find what you're looking for?

Nice treasure chest!

I thought it was a Lane cedar chest but I guess not.

Yeah I'm thinking of taking up woodworking as a hobby to do while im not digging. I want to make mahogany trays for this box and make a replica. Maybe even using dug square nails lol

That's nice looking,I like the dark wood look.
