I love this material. this is from an area I am new to. haven't found any diagnostic artifacts yet but this thing sure does have that paleo look to it. would love a clovis or simpson in this material.

Sure is! This one made it to east cent. Fla.

That is pretty material, Alwayslearning. You might try heat treating that and see what happens, too. Colors will change and hopefully workability will improve, too. If you do, we'd like to see the finished product.

that wasn't even a very good attempt at being facetious.

and you would think.... being a roadie for skynyrd and all.

?? If you're responding to me, alwayslearning, that was a serious post. Surely you are familiar with the practice of heat treating stone in tool manufacturing. Sometimes, with the right material, the results are outstanding. Sorry if that came across some other way.

my apologies.. it sounded to me like you were inferring that I had knapped something and was trying to pass it off as an artifact.

OMG, no, no, not at all! Sorry. I see how you thought that now. I am interested in the heat treatment of lithic materials as that was a popular practice in prehistoric Oklahoma. It changes the character of the stone and the appearance. And it does make it more workable, should you desire to try a little knapping. I don't see a whole lot of research published on that, but to me it's a fascinating subject. I did not mean to imply you made that up yourself. It would be cool to see how that material responds to heat treatment, though.

that would be really cool with that particular material. they were doing a lot of heat treating where I am. I have some pieces that came out beautiful. blackened cobble and flake all over 1 of my sites. they must have blown some up in the fire
