looks like its a colonial state copper from New Jersey 1786-88

too large for shield nickel

NJ copper is correct. The first two pics need to rotate 90 degrees to the right.

Super Find -- and ID!!!!:headbang::hello2::occasion14:

Could be a variety of a 2 cent piece

I need a better book by the looks of it.

Sorry for short post. It started to pour rain so I was drenched and the mosquitos were the worst I ever encountered and I needed to find out what this was ASAp. I hit a new spot I’ve been waiting to hit for months. My research dates house sites here prior to 1850. This was a few inches down and came up about 88 on at pro. Its prettt heavy and I agree with the New Jersey copper ID. This is my oldest US coin by far and I’m super excited

Congrats on a great 1700,s coin !!!

Ashame the one side is so toasted

NICE! Congratulations on a great find!!

I like both ,the tool check and the coin.

I guess cleaning it is prettt much a no go? Just used a tooth brush and water and been rubbing it gently hasn’t really done much. There is a crud where the date would be and I’m tempted but I am scared to mess it up

Yeah I don't think you're going to get anything more off that coin.

Half the coppers that age I find lack any details to even be able to ID it.

You should be happy you can at least tell what kind of coin it is! And you know the dates it could possibly be - 1786 to 1788.
