All I could find on the patent web site was the date it was issued. Anyone have any more info?

Yes EDDE, I know it is a buckle of some type but I did not check my local paper, yet.

This looks like a book-strap buckle from when I was a kid, eg. becoming obsolete by the 1960's. It was infinitely adjustable so as to clamp an arbitrary stack of books. I last saw them used by letter carriers about ten years ago, but by then the buckle was plastic.

Right pat. number - but that link went to a wagon wheel axel hub.

Very interesting indeed, could it not have come off the side of an old carrige, maybe a leather strap to hold down something as well.
