It looks like one of those pins they used in military I think they were awards pins or something like that it would pin the long way and things would hang from the circles. I know what I mean, I just can't remember what I am thinking about! LOL

I found this photo, it wasn't quite what I was thinking about, but gives a general idea: pin.jpg

Thanks cdsieg - I was thinking the same thing, wanting to make sure it's not something that was common back in the day instead of military

I'm probably wrong but could it be from something like a victorian womans purse. The little rings would have held the material and the clasp would been at the top of the brass.

I'm not so sure... It looks like a Victorian chatelaine to me
vintage chatelaine hook - Google Search
The badge with ribbon shown above doesn't use this type of attachment, there is a bar that goes across that goes through the loop in the fabric. The wings shown above are, I believe "sweetheart" wings worn by loved ones back home, not military. (nor are the type of reunion badges shown).

Great point nhbenz, pretty interesting - found it at a 1760 home site in the back yard.....i'm sure there is so much more but we are using junk metal detector's....very tempted to pull the trigger on the Pro, just for this one site!

Hey, you're detecting already in Massachusetts? Dang I'm in NH and still have 8 inches of snow on the ground!
I meant to ask, does the top (or, the side opposite the six attachment eyelets) curve toward the back? And does it look like it might be broken off? (its hard to tell in the photos, although they are nice and clear pictures).

Yes! have been detecting for a few weeks, its been very cold but we had a great first day and weekend of spring!! I guess us M*******s are lucky hehe - been itching to get out there.

The piece is broken and it does bend back like it was attached to something

Ok, I think this supports the idea of it being a chatelaine belt clip. That seems like a natural place for a clip to break, so I wondered if that appeared to be the case. Similar in function, but a little less decorative to the one at the below link. They also describe their function, incase this was unfamiliar to anyone reading.
