I've wanted to ask that same question to but never got around to it! I found one to! the bottom does not look like it has ever been closed! so how can it be a bell???? QUICKSILVER(appletree)

It's a claw bell. Usually made of brass, but it could be steel. My grandmother had one on her coffee table for years, I recognized it right away. They have been around for centuries.
