Hey OP,
I am normally very good and making the most of identifying saltwater finds that are heavily corroded. However, I think this piece is a bit to far gone to say anything for certain.
A bit more info may help point you in some direction. What is the length of the piece? Is is heavy for it's size? What is the thickness (thickness of a nickle, razor blade, etc.)? You can never provide is too much information hen trying to ID something.
