Found this tiny cameo while digging in a Union hut yesterday. It really caught my son and I by surprize. It is only a 1/2" in diameter but is very high relief. From my internet research I think it is made out of volcanic lava from Mt. Vesuvius in Italy. Anyone have any thoughts or theories on finding it in a CW hut?

That is a neat find. Do you screen hut sites?

Thats a really cool find.....I really like that...............HH

Nice score , my bud deadheaddigger found one similar at a hut site we where digging at . We came to the conclusion it was probably dropped by either a visiting wife of a soldier or a nurse .

No, we do not use a screen. We simply dig slow, with knives, and check the dirt thoroughly. We also like to look it over good as we are back filling the hole.

A nurse losing it would make sense. We also found a sheet brass tag, close by, with USA MEDICAL DEPARTMENT stamped on it. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks alot.:icon_thumright: We started digging huts and firepits last year and I have to tell you; I think I like it better than metal detecting. The variety of relics one finds is amazing. I love digging all the non-metallic items made of everything from glass to rubber. It's just as much a part of CW history as a CS belt buckle. Sometimes I wonder just how much stuff is still under our feet that we can't detect.
