I metal detected a beach a few weeks ago. There was a cut/wash out, about 50 yards away from this 18th century shipwreck that was much lower on the beach than the wreck. (using a whites surf PI),after digging a silver spoon about 2 feet down, I put my detector in the hole and got a faint whisper so after another 10 or so scoops,(It seems like I dug a crater to finally get the target out of the hole), under a layer of fist sized rocks, where there was more sand, then another layer of rock, then black smelly and hard muck which I thought was trash. I took it home, as I do with all my trash and after rinsing it off, here's what I got. A piece of hardwood with what appears to be a loop type screw? inside a square hole, which is how I detected it. It looks to me like a fish lure but there's no way to attach a hook. Thanks in advance for any idea what this might be.
