found this near an old mine

This old rusted steel container was found in an area in Amador County, CA where there is evidence of old gold mining activity. It's a fairly heavy duty steel container as shown, with the top threaded cap rusted shut. Mostly empty, except for maybe an ounce or so of liquid can be heard sloshing around inside. I'm thinking it must be a container for mercury or some other chemical?

Who knows - but could easily be something nasty and/or toxic inside.
Unless it has value to you, I would consider disposing it / recycling it in some eco-friendly way.
