Hello all,
I just joined today, 01/27/2020, and thought I would try and entertain you with a story that goes along with my finds in the photo.
I've been metal detecting for 20 some odd years and have enjoyed every minute of it until a back injury put a momentary halt to my swinging. During my down time, I had a lot of time to ponder on my life. Knowing that I could not, nor would I, give up, I started working my way back. It took six months but, I am back. Here's the rest of the story...
I have been having a fit with a new Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300 trying to get the detector to even come close to correctly ID'ing my targets. I am returning the detector but, I got a surprise when I was out this morning (see pic).
I had been neglecting some property that my grandparents owned many years ago. They have long passed now but, the property is still in the family. My grandparents were coin hoarders. My grandad would put all his change into a coffee can or a Ball Jar and take a walk into the woods every weekend - my grandma would give her Snuff cans to grandad to have him hide her stash as well. One day I decided I would follow him and see where he was going. Off he went into the woods and I took off after him. I was smart though, I went off to one side far enough that I was certain he wouldn't see me and stepped lightly so as not to cause too much noise. He weaved back and forth for some time and then straightened his path. Aha, I got you now! He walked up to a huge Oak tree and put down his treasure. I immediately made a mental note of the tree and I knew one day I would be back.
He started looking around to see if he was alone (that's what I was thinking anyway) and put one hand on that big Oak tree, reached down, unzipped his zipper, and took a leak! AUGHHHHH, man I was ticked off. After he finished he picked up his treasure and started walking back towards the house. Yup, I was confused. He finally made it back to the yard and proceeded to the front part of the house. I eased up the side of the garage and peeked around the corner only to see him sitting in his well-worn Wicker chair laughing so hard that I thought I would have to run over and pick him up.
Talk about being embarrassed! He ribbed me about that day for many months to come. I'm not embarrassed now.
I never could figure out how many years that they did this and believe me I tried. Time and time again I would sit and watch grandad walk into the woods - I even started timing is round trip adventures to help pinpoint the area. I spent hours looking for any sign of where he might be hiding the stash - I never did find it.
Years later when they [grandparents] went to their great reward in the sky, I took my detector down to the property and started working in the area I had figured he was going. I found a bunch of trash but, never any coinage until... this morning (four years after I started really pounding the acreage). I stopped there and recalculated my original time for his round trip - figuring in his wooden leg and several paths that he would take, and off I went to poke around a bit. I was just about to give up when my detector made a familiar tone... Yuppers, it was Silver. Could this be the place? After three and a half long hours I was certainly counting on it to be. Alas, it was not meant to be but, I did find the three Liberty Head Nickels (1877, 1905, and 1911) RIGHT NEXT TO THE TREE WHERE HE TOOK A LEAK!!!!!
Even now he is still getting in the last laugh!
I miss my grandparents and greatly miss the time spent with them. We, me and my sister, always had a great time staying with them after school.
I know this was a bit drawn out but, I had to tell it like it happened in hopes that you would feel like you were there with me.
It has turned off cold again and I won't be going out diggin' until the weekend. The BHD 3300 is going in the mail tomorrow morning as the discrimination is awful and I could never get it figured out. This was the second one with almost the same issue. It has been replaced with the Bounty Hunter Land Ranger Pro. What a rig it is!!!!
I hope you enjoyed your time spent reading this as much and I enjoyed remembering, and writing, it.
