hey guys dug this up digging a target in the victorian goldfields, put it in my trash bag thinking it was part of stubby, got home and had another look , there is most likely more of it in the hole as it looks like i chipped this bit off a larger chunk while digging. may be Obsidienne but has shiny specks all through it, if i hold it up to the sun the light doesn't penetrate it. i don't have much idea when it comes to rocks, i will have to remedy that.

thanks fellas .

Looks like its got fractures which break up the light into its spectral colours, what ever it is. A rough, freshly exposed surface would tell more.

Zoom in on the picture Hollow shared. You can easily see it is very different from rainbow obsidian. :)

Welcome HollowGround! I've fossicked a fair amount in Victoria -- mostly in the hills out of Bairnesdale, Reedy Creek and other areas around Beechworth. Have read far mos than I've dug, though. I have never heard of *any* obsidian being dug in Oz. I have to agree with Simbad -- looks like black opal to me, which would be *very* unusual for the goldfields area, but far more likely than obsidian! It's a magnificent specimen!
