Found this fancy dress button(?)

I found what I think is a dress button yesterday. I would love to know more about it. Can you folks help? It is around the size of a quarter.

Its really pretty....but I am not sure its a button...are there tiny screw or nail holes on each side?

It has a wire loop on the back that looks like it was soldered on some how. The loop, of course, is bent over but could have served as a way to sew it onto a garment as a button.

Found in Lancaster County on the Northern Neck of Virginia. Here is the back of the button . . .

Okay... I was just cruising some other sites and found a few ornate buttons "shaped" like this but not "looked" like this one.

I think you have a fancy 1700's British button.

My friend found one of these buttons in Lancaster,Virginia (same county you found yours) If i recall it was a house site dating from the 1840s to turn of the century.
