I found this old butter knife at the thrift store and need help identifying the marking. It reads an eagle mark then "WM ROGERS.9". Is this sterling..Its not magnetic and it feels and looks like sterling. I am guessing that the .9 could mean 90 percent but perhaps not..What are your thoughts? See photos, thanks!

If I remember correctly the 9 would indicate it was made from silver coins during the early 1800's to mid 1840's
Cool find

Likely not sterling. Hit it with some acid to be sure.

Back in the early to mid 1800's, and a little later, it was popular to make jewelry, pocket watches, and other products like the butter knife in "Coin Silver", which was 90%.

Boy, I bet you could use that OnARoll :)

Thanks guys for the support and replies, I always check for silver items and this one is for sure intriguing, especially since I paid 12 cents for it. I will have to do some more digging and get it tested to see whats up. I will keep you posted! Thanks for the links!

Oh man please do update when find out! As far as I've learned the coin silver was primary marked "coin" or "coinsilver" and I can't seem to pull up an records of it being marked with a "9". I am no expert though and if that turns out to be the case and that knife is solid silver that would be a good weapon in my silver finding arsenal. It seems that when the competition sees "Rodgers" they automatically assume its silver plate. I've actually gotten some pretty big scores from antique shops from Rodgers sterling though it was all marked with the typical "sterling" stamp just overlooked by the owners. Anyways good luck!
