Found spikes underwater

I found these spikes in a pile in the sand at a depth of about thirty-five feet while diving off the Florida coast. It appears that they were violently removed from, I assume, wood, as they are twisted and bent and one is missing the head. They are hand forged and appear to be made of bronze. Are these a common find? How should I preserve them?

Thanks :)

With a bit more geographic info some of the wreck divers down here could probably (maybe) even give you a possible ID on the site you found them. Good Luck. Good looking find.

chances are good that they were used to build a pre 1800 sailing ship. that style of nail was driven through two pieces of wood and then the tip was bent over to prevent it from coming back out by itself.
Smaller nails were used for hinges on doors, same method drive them through and bend over, since the nail couldn't be reused, even after removing it, it was called "a dead nail", hence the term "dead as a door nail"
Have a good one
