What a great find and what a bonus to have the key as well! 
I think Buck nailed it... Santa Fe Railroad Lock from the late 1800s.

It IS a railroad switch lock. To find the matching barrel key with it, IS highly unusual. Nice lock. Anything on the back of the hasp, often the maker is stamped on it.
