Interesting musket...wonder if it was a hook for fishing or something? :icon_scratch:

And which brass piece are you talking about?

Great finds!! I have some of those brass thingys and I have been told they are saddle rivets. The musket ball is interesting. I am only aware of nails being driven into musket balls during the Revolutionary War

http://www.historicalimagebank.com/...ar_Fort_Ticonderoga_about_70_caliber.jpg.html.

This is where the term, "To be nailed" may have come from...

I am unaware if this was used during the Civil War.

Well done!!

The brass on the left. The other is a rivet i believe.

Ahh, I missed the piece of brass. The other piece might be part of an old harmonica.

Congratulations, you had a good day. :icon_thumright: I have never seen a Lead Ball with a nail in it.
That would leave a real bad mark!!!
I think Papa Bear got them both right on the Brass, the rivet is for leather saddles and harnesses, almost anything made out of leather.
They are still used today.

Thanks I love saving anything from the civil war I just wish more ppl would allow hunting on there property. I dont understand it I would rather dig it up then to just leave it sitting there in the ground. I have asked many ppl and most ppl will not allow mw to metal detect on there property.

I equate it to being a door to door salesman. I bring prints of maps, overhead imagery etc, to back up my request. I also offer up some of my finds for them to keep. Telling some property owner that he will have a conversation piece for his mantle piece or office shelf will go a long way. And remember its all about saving the relics so others can look and admire them so, if its the property owner who has it, you have essentially accomplished your goal. If someone says "No" I thank them for their time and wish them a great day. Head up and look forward my friend!!
