Found Some Bottles Along The Riverbank, Where Should I Dig?

I'm pretty new to bottle collecting, and just recently found some bottles from the late 1800's along the banks of a tidal river. I mostly found broken bottle pieces strewn along the riverbank, but was able to pick up a few bottles that were intact (I'm still cleaning them). I'm wondering if I should start digging here to see if there are more bottles that are buried? What is the best way to locate buried bottles?

Old bottles are always collectable. As far as finding them you might try the dowsing thread. They have real hot tips.

Hey Jordan...

Welcome to the forum and to bottle hunting. You should try to post or at loeast list some of the bottles you have found. describe the area to us and take a good look around. Bottles near a river bank may have come from a dump on the bank. Or if the location is near a mooring or anchorage area, they could have come from ships, or if it is near a dock, could have been thrown off the dock. You should see if there are some old maps of the area available. check out the local neighborhood and chat with some of the old timers. See where people tossed their trash.

Have fun.

The bottles that I have found so far at this site include a clear horizontal spiral peppersauce bottle, a aqua color small round ink bottle, a A.H. Flanders MD New York Rushes bottle, a Lea & Perrins Worcestor Fire Sauce bottle, and a B.J. Heffernan Soda bottle. I'm still cleaning some of the bottles, and will post pics when I am done. I have posted pics of the peppersauce and the ink bottle before. The bottles were on the riverbank surface or just partially buried. On the shore near the riverbank there are bricks strewn all over, but there is no sign of a foundation. I have an old map of the area that shows there wasnt any houses there either. I have traveled very far in both directions up the riverbank from that area and also have found lots of bricks along the shore, but no other artifacts except in that one area. I have a feeling it was a trash pit of some sort. Near where I found the bottles I found some IH pennies, old clay marbles, and a few other artifacts. I want to try to find more bottles but the riverbank isnt that soft. Also, some hobos likes to camp out right where I want to dig. They used some of the old bricks to make a little fire pit. Is there a method for finding buried bottles or should I just dig random holes?
