Found Site of Babe Ruth's blast
Yesterday's San Jose paper had an article and photo of an old ballpark from the 1920s. Talked about and had photos of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig being there on a barnstorming tour in 1926, the year before he hit his record setting 60 homers in 1927. The Babe stepped to the plate and hit a mammoth homerun that cleared not only the fence, but the creek behind it. The old Del Monte packing plant and big tower in the old photo are still there today by the creek, and the article said the Orchard Supply Hardware is right on the site of the old field. So I took a drive over there today and walked behind the building, along the creek and stood right there along the creek thinking about watching the Babe's blast fly through the air 80 years ago. I even shared the story and the photo with a curious employee of the hardware store staring at me through the fence. There's a lot of cool stuff you can experience without even having the detector handy. Now, if only they hadn't paved over the darn field!
