Could be wrong on this as I'm still learning coinage, but I believe that date reference only works for dimes and quarters. I think the only nicklels that contained silver are the war time ones from 1942-1945.

Sorry Dan- Kev is right on this one. No silver in that batch of nickels. Keep trying though, I recently bought a couple rolls of halves an ended up with 9 silvers. They're still out there, in the ground or not!!! LOL

The easiest way to get silver from the bank is in rolls of halves. You can tell silver nickels because they have a huge mint mark above Monticello. And they are usually a weird dark color.

Dang! >:(

Is that why they're called nickle. ::)

Still it's cool to have found such old ones. I was looking for this supposed "new" nickle.

The "supposed" new nickel is out there, I have received two in change. All of the above posts are correct on the metal content, but personally I do save any nickels from 1955 and before. There were over 1 billion (yes, that is billion, not million) 1964 nickels made, so there really is not any use in saving those.

For some reason, that escapes me now. I started saving older date nickles years ago from my change. In the casinos i'd sometimes play the nickle machines, just to pick out the older ones.
