Found silver set. Can't tell if it is plated or not.

Hi folks,

I found a collection of silverware for sale. I am hoping for Sterling silver. I like the color, but what gives me pause is the bluish tinge I see on the top of the items. Then again, the pictures were taken outside and the weather was nice, so could it be a reflection of the sky?

The lady said that there were the letters S and P (among others that I forgot) and the number 7877.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks a million!

Sterling silver will normally be marked .925 or Sterling. I strongly suspect its plated for several reasons. The first its apparently not marked as silver. Second a sterling set like that would have a manufacturers logo on the bottom and possibly hallmarks. Get pictures of the bottom.

The letters S and P stand for silver plate, but it looks like a nice set.

Depending on price, If it isn't clearly marked, I would pass. There isn't much of a resale value for Silver Plate.

It's highly likely that the set is plate rather than sterling , it might still be a nice set ,cleaned and polished it could make a decent gift .

Hey everyone, thank you SO MUCH for your replies. There is at least one hallmark, and it is a crest. If that's a hallmark. I'm new to this stuff. I suggested she take pictures and send them, but she wasn't sure they'd show up well since the marks are small. Just trying to save myself an hour long drive if I can. And what do you think of the bluish color? Thanks!
