What size is it? Does the hole pass through? If not, and it's not huge, I put my guess on a differential plug.

That sounds about right DKW!

Threads (too fine) and depth are larger that expected for plumbing plugs.

The round hole appears to be a center where the object was chucked and squared in a lathe. Tony

Differential plug is a good idea, but it is really big. About a 2 inch diameter and about 2.5 inches tall. Could it be a tractor diff.? I do not know much about farming equipment.

Thanks for the responses

Well, curiosity got the best of me. I walked out to the barn in my shorts and house shoes. I've got a couple of small tractors there. Below is a picture of the fill plug on a Farmall A. It measures about 1.25 inches. The D15 Allis Chalmers plug looked a little bigger but I wasn't going to crawl under it in the mud for a pic. I was to much of a sissy(30 degrees) to walk down to the machine shed where the bigger tractors are.

I would think it's possible for a larger piece of machinery to have a 2" plug. It's hard telling how many pieces of machinery with gearboxes or differentials have been over that ground in the past.

Thanks for going outside and taking a picture of your's. I am agreeing with you know that it must ne some sort of a differential plug. Just don't know to what.

My 2 cents says it a plug for the rear end in a car. The square hole is where you would put the 3/8 ratchet to take it out. Its the fill plug. I could be wrong.

looks like a giant set screw to keep a rod from turning in a bushing.
