the picture is not that detailed if we had a couple of different shots that would be great. It could possibly be Nephrite-Jade or Jadeite since they are commonly found on California beaches. Better pics would tell a better story.

hard to tell color from your pic...I never know if it's an accurate representation or an over correction by an auto setting on the camera.

Jade comes in many colors too.

Jade Color | Jade Hunt

white, green and a warm brown/reddish color are the ones that I've seen most frequently.
(I've been to a town full of sculptors in Taiwan...and saw their masterworks and non-masterworks...also went to the Jade museum while there)

The reddish brown jade is least valuable in Taiwan. Pure green is most valuable. Massive pieces like entire Grandfather clocks made from Jade are obviously going to have atleast two colors of jade in them. (white and green go together most often in large pieces)

On the site I linked to in previous post they do show a blue jade. (your pic looks blueish) They also mention that it's been found in the Big Sur region of California.

Here's another pic. Anybody know the best way to cut it up?

Diamond slab saw, most likely your best bet cutting it up. Take it to a local rock club to see if its jade, but there is another test you can do. It's not a "perfect-positive" test, but it's worked for many of the pieces of jade I have. Take a hair, hold it very tightly around one of the corners and move a flame across it where it touches the rock. Jade dissipates heat very quickly and most times the flame will not burn the hair, even if left on the hair for a second or two. But the best bet is to have it looked at by someone who is educated and equipped to make a determination on physical/optical properties. I hesitate to even guess, but without a better, bigger picture, my first instinct is telling me it's jasper.
