Found near old cellar hole

It is a dome shaped piece, kind of heavy, with a hole in the center that looks like it could be copper or brass. It is about 2 inches tall and 2 and a half inches wide at the bottom. When I pulled it out of the ground it had some old looking string coiled up inside it as seen in the picture. The cellar hole is in an area that dates back to the late 18th century, but I have also found items from this century so could be any age.

It is a bell dome, looks like one that you would find in an old dial phone, or off an old wooden Ericson
