It's a harness buckle. Off horse or mule harness.

It is a "Union Loop" roller horseharness buckle. The thin iron sheetmetal roller is missing from your find. We date them as being post civil war, because they show up in late-1800s/early-1900s horseharness/tack/saddlery mailorder catalogs. So far as I currently know of, nobody has reported seeing a Union Loop buckle in civil war era catalogs.

The photo below shows a dug one with its roller intact, as found and posted here by fellow T-Net member Quindy.

keep looking, and you might find 3 more horseshoes and more buckles............and bones!!!!!
