Found near a Civil War Battleground ???

I have now found 2 of these in seperate areas. I know pics are not that great. They seem to be iron and have little square barbs down the sides that you would maybe use to latch or button a fabric or leather strap. Any help would be appreciated. Yes, the are in a U shape, but maybe rust made them that way and maybe they were straight at one time. Just wondering what they might be.

If there's no protrusions from the "U" then it's not spurs. A "Tom Thumb" spur (smallest) has a small protrusion which isn't much but it's there. Don't see anything like that. Doesn't look like the knob(the pointy part that is used on the horse) was broken off either.
