Detector(s) used
White's DFX 300 Sunray DX-1 probe/ XLT Sunray XL-1 probe
This time in my own yard ;D
It was only about 2 inches down, strong mid 80s signal even with a round chunk of iron next to it.
Was just out for a half hour or so then it started to rain. Plus I really wanted to go in and see what it was.
Even after washing it off, it showed no details,

but I could see it had been flattened, like a penny placed on a railroad track.
So into the boiling hydrogen peroxide it went, for about 30 Min.
The result ??? No date but pretty sure its a Braided Hair Large Cent (1839-1857)

When it stops raining I will have to see if there are any left that are not squashed :D

Gosh, even with no date detail that's still a really nice find. . . one can only wonder who's hands it once passed through ;)

New York in mid January and you can metal detect!! I'm jealous!

And that little gem was right in your own back yard. Bet there's more out there!

Maybe global warming isn't such a bad thing... ;)

Large copper is large copper no matter what it looks like. I'm glad you were able to ID yours. Congrats!!

Very nice find DJA----Those large coppas are a thrill.

Awesome, Donny, how did I miss this? That just proves to look in your own backyard. How old is your house, my buddy? :)

I have another wacky idea coming your way very soon. ;) :D

The coin is definitely a Braided Hair coppa. WTG, buddy!

Well I am hoping my luck holds out and I find more here.
As for Global Warming, well it looks like I will be able to hunt more all weekend before a little snow hits.

Thanks kirk, my house was built in the 80s I think but the property dates to the mid 1800s
Only problem is like a lot of areas it has been filled in, so most of the goodies if they are there,
are out of reach. Hard to say when this was dropped, but it was real shallow.
HH,

exactly how big are these large cents. I thought i found one the other day and it was practically the size of my inside palm and i figured it was too big and too heavy to be a coin so i left it at the site, although it was very smooth and round like a cent.... should i go back? could it have been a large cent?

US large cents were 27-29 mm in diameter. I think the older colonial coppers were a little larger but I have yet to dig one.
If its round and fits in your hand, don't leave it at the site :D

LOL well now we just had a storm that dropped 2 feet on us and 5 feet 20miles north of us,as far as global warming goes my prediction is that in 30-40 years from now New York will have Florida's weather...that's if the earth doesn't EXPLODE before that :)

Donny awesome find bro. and it came from your yard>>>(didn't you tell me the yard was barren) lol

WTG cant wait till the thaw this spring,i do believe i have found some choice hunting areas
