I've found thousands of pull tabs, but never saw one like the one I dug up today. Did a little research and it's probably the very first pull tab made! They only used them from 1962 to 1965 or so and then went over to the ring pull design. I'm so excited! Going to have to buy a Riker display box for this baby! LOL!

Congratulations on the awesome find. I have never seen one that old, but I have a few ring poll tabs on display.

Ever watch the British show Detectorists? "Ring Pulls Through the Ages" ...great show...nice find...as far as pull tabs go!

Congrats and it's even intact!

Yup, Lance sells them on eBay. I'm tempted, but this guy is WAY too rare to sell!

Great find, send it off to be graded...you never know! :occasion14:

So people have be littering with these pull tabs since 1962! :BangHead:

What's really sad is that I knew it was a "rare" pull tab when I found it and had to do research to confirm it! Guess I should have been an archaeologist...

GA Boy, thanks for the info. I'll be sure to keep the location a secret so the archies don't designate it as a historical site!

About a dozen years ago I searched a park that used to be a drive in. I found 2-3 of those, tons of beavertails, and a condom tin. The funny thing about that condom is that it was banned in at least one African country because it did not prevent the spread of AIDS.

Oh the memories.

Is it for sale I gave up on silver and have many pulltab display cases. That one looks like a double die silver collar.

Slab that one!

Push in tabs were before these type? Found one yesterday and will send pic in them morning still attached to can.

I remember the push in tabs in the 1970's. It had a small tab and a larger one that you pushed into the can. Bad idea that didn't last too long.

I found one like that a while back, quite sure it ended up in the trash. I didn't realize it was rare until you posted. Wish I would have kept it now lol

Bet that gave you a strange reading!

......i think i remember those...lol!

Yup, just checked it and the VDI hops between 55 and 60! I've been digging anything 50 and up at this spot. Dug lots of trash, but I have found at least a dozen nickels there. When in doubt, dig it out holds true at trashy spots. Gotta be some gold there as well...

Oh yeah baby! Love me some classic pull tabs. Often surrounded by wheats and SILVER! Great way to date your dirt. Thanks for posting this often overlooked yet key ingredient to identifying your target area.:headbang:

I've got a handful around here somewhere if you are feeling trasher's remorse.:sad11:
