Had a couple hours to do some swinging so headed into town today to a spot I had my eye on for a while. Figured it had been hammered but what the heck....give it a shot. Found a lot of clad and pull tabs, can slaw and such but was rewarded with a couple nice keepers. 2 firsts actually....my first toonie...

About an hour later I got my oldest dime yet. 1870 Newfoundland dime. Never heard of it until i found it and googled on my phone lol...

Now that's an old good looking dime!!! :icon_thumright:

Congrats Bob on a couple of firsts,

I hate the word "twoonie, but I like to find them.
Hey in case you didn't know that Newfie dime is a KEY DATE, and is 300 bucks in VG , and you got at least VG there...BIG CONGRATS...I'd love to find that one, Awesome save.

Congrats on that rare 1870 silver Victoria dime!

That is a pretty dime, nice job :)

There's a few different varieties of this date and the prices can be all over the map too. It's interesting that the 10 is gone and this could be a weak strike version of this coinage.

Congrats on the key date silver, the Newfie coinage are a really nice design.

Great Canadian coins.I guess not many of those 2 dollar coins are found. The Victoria coin is how many cents, however it is a real nice find.

That's an early dime for Canada, and a sweet one! Congrats!

Newfoundland wasn't even part of Canada yet when that was minted. I found a 1870 Newfoundland five cent piece in my own yard recently which was a surprise. My goal is to find a 1873 H five cent someday and that is a very valuable coin. $700 in about good grade!

Congratulations on the two keepers, you never know. No place is ever truly hunted out.

NICE DIME , AND THEY ALL SAY SILVER TO MATCH NICE FIND.

Thanks for the info. When I found it and googled it I saw that it was 92.5 silver and minted in England. That was as far as I got for research. After seeing these replies this morning I'm digging deeper for info. So far I know this variety has the dot before Newfoundland but not after. It was minted at the royal mint in London. And there were only 30,000 minted. This coin is also well known for the weak strike on the reverse. The research on this little coin is almost as fun as finding it in the first place. I dont know anything about grading coins but is this something worth having professionally graded?

Never met a Newfie that I didn't like, great place and folks. They have a wild sense of humour also, here's a few of the places to live in NFL.
