Found this coin and a whole bunch of trash in the woods. I always wonder who dropped it... ???
This pic was after cleaning the coin. I let it soak in soap water for a week and then lightly scrubbed off the crud so I could read the date.
Im semi-proud of the pic considering the coins condition. :)

Its a 1891 V Nickel

Nice coin. You must have been hunting with a low discrimination setting. Looks like the coin took on the red clay look of your soil. Any coin that you can read the date is a good find in my book. Keep up the good work.

Way to go BBB!! I found one on 10/05 (1908). It was a cruddy as yours and I finally got it to clean up fairly well. I thought it was one of those metal slugs at first, but was thrilled to find out it wasn't!!

I don't have a "before" pic, but here's the "after"

Nice find, as for cleaning V-Nickels I usually don't. If I can read the date, I usually don't try to clean them.

For some reason they are very hard to clean. In the soapy water you used was salt from your tap water, Salt is very
bad on V-nickels and IH pennies. If you really have to clean this kind of coin use distilled water.

Keep us posted on your finds. Can't wait to see what else comes out of that site. You are going back there aren't you?

Nice find. I found my first V Nickel in December. I was very happy. ;D Our soil in Ohio is tough on nickels.
