Found my first Shield Nickel!

Found my first shield nickel close to where my gggg grandfather was buried in the late 1800s. He is buried next to his former slaves who he gave land to and built homes for after they were freed. Figured this had to be from someone who came to either one of their funerals or came to visit shortly after. Cant find a date on it but they were made between 1866 and 1883. Thanks for looking!

Nice! Love those old nickels. The dates on the shields are tiny. You might try using Goes4ever's nickel cleaning method--basically scrub those red nickels with SOS pads. It works well, as you can see from my avatar (once a red V nickel), and may reveal a date. --Tin Foil

My impression is that most people use boiling hydrogen peroxide or soaking in olive oil for LCs. SOS pads are basically fine steel wool and would scratch your largie. I only use SOS on nickels. Have you posted pics of the LC?

Brasso will clean it up nice it ain't like your selling it then steel wool I clean all my coins I'm keeping them anyway
