I found a site that says a button that looks just like it is civil war union navy but I'm not sure I buy that as much as I'd like to. I found it in NE Michigan so I guess it could have been from a veteran traveling home or something, or maybe it's much newer than that.

It seems to be about exactly the side of a penny. This is the best pic I can get before I get home from vacation in a week.

Well I hate to break the bad news but your button is a fashion button. The iron back is one way to tell, and another is the loop on the end of the anchor should extend to the rim and let the stars run through it.

Wow that's a total bummer!

Oh well I think I will just put it in with my other buttons and it will be our little secret :)

Thanks for the quick help!

The square shank in the back is a dead giveaway that it's a modern day button, old buttons don't have thst kind of shank and the back is ferrous metal.

Yea modern self shank steel back civilian blazer button. It could be 50 years old but definitely not US Navy.
