Found MDing in yard of house I rent

It was near the fence - the house next door was built in 1905. my house was built in the 1950.

Looks like an old tin can - only the bottom has some plating that is peeling, and it has the patents dates in the 1800's stamped in. the pic is pretty clear

Just casually wondering - not urgent, nor do I think I have a real treasure

another simple guess is oil tank for oil/bicycle/carbide lamp...like this one,patents listed on bottom
