Hi everyone, I dug this in the woods of Mid Coast Maine at a old farm and this area has been logged twice. Once by oxen, and once by skidder. Any idea what it is?

Thanks for the replies. It's not hollow. It's solid. The flat end is flat, doesn't look like it's been struck with a hammer. The odd thing to me is the relief cut into the side of it.

The flat is typical for being held in place with a set screw. Tony

melted aluminum can...fire nugget.

It's iron, definitely machined into shape.

Its a wedge tool for seperating a bit from an old friction style chuck, and for the life of me I'm drawing a blank and can't remember the name. The milled out portion was used for driving the wedge back out if stuck.

That's interesting. I'm not sure I've ever seen this old style chuck your speaking of. I will definitely Google this.
