Found in Virginia - Solved

I found this the other night after work near my house. It was very deep (about 10"). I'm guessing some sort of keeper for a strap, maybe from a bridle or other farm animal. Anyone ever seen something like this?

Wow, that is an exact match. Is this still the design today or is this an older item? We have had the property for 20 years and there has not been any horses. It was about 10" down.

There are many designs for horse bits yours is a driving bit. I think those type were patented in the late 1800s and are still being made.
