I dug this in a union camp in Virginia. Part of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. It was completely covered in rust until I did electrolysis. We also dug a sword hanger, buttons, intact Henry bullets, 3 ringers, horseshoes, Iron chain, a spoon and a few other relics at the site. It is obviously made of iron and appears to have the look of older hand forged iron. I am curious what it may have been used for. I have seen some similar examples of cannon locks or pins but none exactly like this. I find everything I did interesting and although I realize that it's not always possible I want to know the story of every piece. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Too short for a picket pin.

Maybe artillery related? From a lock chain or a limber?

Sounds like you're killing it down there!

I did see some lock chains that resembled it but this one looks a little heavier. It also looks as if the tip may have be broken off which means there could have been more to it but i'm not sure.

I don't think it's broken off. This pin was not meant to be driven in. There is no wear on the top from being pounded.

I'm guessing it's a linchpin or locking pin of some sort. Which opens up the possibility of it being civilian farm related.

Miniature field hockey stick! Probably not though. I agree it looks old, whatever it is. Has the right dimensions to be a simple handmade linchpin of some sort...
