My son -in-law found this while we were out in the NV desert. It is 8 inches long and 1 1/2 inc diameter. The body is aluminum and the "wings" are stainless steel. It has a slight burnt smell. It is hollow until the end with holes. No markings at all on it. There is a military test range nearby. I think it is form an errant rocket. Any thoughts? Guesses? Aliens?

Part of a tube fired pod rocket from a helicopter?
2.75 variant maybe? No too small.

Flare maybe. Looks to be 1.5 inches or so.
I'm guessing flare. Old flare.

Hmm these things must be universal, I found one in an area in the Central Highlands of Victoria which had been used by the army for manouvers. My son who is ex Army informed me that irt is known as a "sub-munition" and is used in training in place of a full sized round, cheaper and not as dangerous

Thanks Centralvic, it looks like you have one to. I did a search for sub-munition but didn't come up with one like it. Is this part of a rocket? How is it fired? From what? Thanks.

Mines 35mm diameter, not sure what calibre that would be. No armoured vehicles or choppers practice in my area so assume it is shoulder fired.

yes, it is a rocket, a parachute flare type of rocket. held in a tube of same material, take top off, insert flare, bottom down, into top of flare container. slap the bottom with hand...wooosh. flare floats down on a small white parachute.

overall lenght, before firing, is about 13 inchs. great infantry toys.
