Relic Hunting
I have never seen any WWII relics like these. I dug nearly 20 from the same hole Saturday. Only 5 in. deep as were the 30-06 blank cartridges for the c1903-A3 Springfield rifles used by U.S. army troops dated "42" for 1942 we found in the same area. The relics are 40mm dia. (1.5 in.) and have a "fin' stamped "AS". Opposite the fin is the base that may have the primer. The case looks like aluminum. This is a puzzler. Thanks for any info. May be a small mortar round or flare???

Hey Q,
First of all, I'm glad to hear you're out and about swingin' the MD. I'm not the WW2 person, so hopefully some of the experts will weigh in on it. They look somewhat like parachute flares, but I think most of those were smaller than 6 inches.

Those are some interesting finds! Very cool! Congratulations! I know little of WWII ordinance items. so I can't add any information for you! Thanks for posting.

Flares or maybe practice rifle grenades or bomblets?

I'm don't know much about WW2 armament but I keep seeing something called "fin stabilized" armor piercing anti-tank rounds. I haven't really been able to find anything that looks like your finds, though.

Great ID, flare tube...still used in the 90’s...I’ve fired a few dozen myself. The worst part is they bet sucked into the rotor blades of landing helicopters if they are still attached to the parachute......will ruin your day.
