1889 Brooklyn Bridge commemorative medalet. The hole is for suspension from a blue ribbon, which hung from a hatchet-shaped pin inscribed, "I cannot tell a lie." 1889 marked the centennial of Washington's inauguration.

Ii have found out that the property i found the cross belonged to a John Haslet that fought with George Washington he was one of his right hand men . he died at the battle of Princeton Jan 6,1777. i am trying to find out if he had belonged to any mason organizations. that would be neat to connect him to the cross. i have also found inaugural medallion dated April 30 1789 the day of Washington's speech on the Brooklyn bridge? also civil war bullets , half reales half dimes 3 cent pieces large cents flying eagles and lots of other old coins and tokens and buttons Thanks Messick81

The date is commemorative: 1789 was the year of Washington's first inauguration.

The medal was actually struck in 1889, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of that event.

(The Brooklyn Bridge, depicted on the medal's reverse, did not open until 1883.)

a lock of hair if it has any roots....you could have a DNA test done on it and see if anything can be found...coool stuff.

Mitochondrial DNA testing is pretty expensive I'd imagine....

I once found a lock of hair with some Civil War items in an old pouch. . Still have it somewhere. It must have been a popular thing to do.

It was. Confederate General JEB Stuart is said to have carried a lock of Laura Ratcliff's (Confederate spy) hair. Her house is just a few miles from mine.

I would like to see the 1789 GW medallion.
