Need help in the identy of this. I found it on the beach here off Okinawa. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks and good luck to all of you.

Hi Kevin. What you found is a form of money. More like a trade item used to buy everyday things. Not sure how old it is but it is old because the Japaneese now have a standard system of coinage and don't use these trade items anymore. Your find has some real historical value and is possibly very valuable esspecially if it is made of gold. Also Kevin, what took you to Okinawa? Matt

Thanks to you all. It looks as though it is brass so gold is not there. What took me to Okinawa is the US Navy. I used to be stationed in Sasebo and finishing my career with 30 years here in Okinawa. the weather is rainy and about 70 degrees. To take a better look at the beaches here in Okinawa you can go to this website www.japanupdate.com. I received an e-mail from IAN in Northern Japan and he stated that it appears to be a trade token for costume wear. There is a place here called Ryuko Mura which offer tourist the opportunity to wear a costume and they have to buy this coin for 500 Yen. So as it looks I made 8000 Yen that day. Thanks again for all of your comments. I will keep it though it is different. Good luck to you all and may the Greek gods prosperall of us with some great finds for 2005.

Cool find. I didnt think the old trade item idea was it, as it looked too well made and too modern. The rows of ridges were too well defined and neat. HH

Kevin,
Have you made it out to Kin Blue Beach just north of Camp Hansen? If you ever make it out there I would love to hear what it produced.

Nice find BTW.

The shape reminds me of the coins you usually see associated with the maneki neko, or lucky cat statues. It might be a lucky charm! Keep it on you when you go hunting!
