Found in Monterey Ca near Presidio and the statue of Father Junipero Serra.
1 - Button (brass?) with design on top and knurling on sides (4 spots)
2 - small odd shaped item made of silver. Has some kind of corrosion that I'm not sure how to remove. Weighs just under 5gms. Could it be some type of hammered coin. Can't make out any details ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1444076234.308118.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1444076252.099547.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1444076275.043417.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1444076288.882989.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1444076307.367827.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1444076325.372856.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1444076339.445156.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1444076354.626023.webp
3 - small cupped item made of lead. Weighs approx 9.8gms

I'm looking for identification and/or cleaning method

Someone here may be able to exactly identify the button, but almost no doubt a military button as that side had Spanish, Mexican and US military presence from 1792 to now! My guess is its a US military button c. 1840s to 1910s.

#1: IMO is a modern day snap button.
#2: IMO is not silver, it is trash.
#3:This reminds me of part of an old squeeze tube, like they use for toothpaste today.

Ant, curious-- what identifies the button as modern-day and what date span would that be?

#2 tested by a jeweler and confirmed silver. Could be melted residue. The corrosion covers details but when I first looked at I saw nothing. With a little cleaning I thought I could see somethings. Is there a way to clean it just to make sure.
Re: #3 the jewelry store owner who sells vintage jewelry thought it looked like the bottom of a leg to something like a vase. It's hard to tell but on one side there might be an indication of a break. Within a few hundred feet there's an old historic church. Is there anything like urns that might have a lead part to it?

Why on the button, because those knured edge snap button are not uncommon. I throw them away, and that you dug it on the Persidio of Monterey. If they aren't scrapping the grass around Father Junipero Serra's Statue then anything very old is too deep, and when they do any serious excavation they have archeologists on hand, and the locals hit anything they can get away with, Tom From Salinas makes sure of that, that's how I know: ). I was stationed at Fort Ord so I know the area, I also worked on the Persidio of San Francisco from 1980-1992.

missoiula4me, have we met before ? (and I'm just not recognizing your forum/avetar name) ? I'm in Salinas, only 20-ish miles from you.

A word to the wise: If you truly meant that the object(s) were found next to the Serra Statue (the lower presidio park), then beware. A "B.O.L." went out last year to docents that man the museum there (of which I am one) to BOL for md'rs. That's federal historic park. Oh, and it's been hunted to death in years past (before archaeological awareness "set in"). Drop me a line and I'll let you know of the finds dating back to guys that were even hitting it in the 1970s.

It turned out that the suspicion they had that md'ing was going on (divot/dig-marks) was unfounded. Turned out to be boyscouts playing a geo-caching game. Doh! But you can bet that shook me up in the meantime, to get that B.O.L. Don't let them catch you out there. If you were down the road outside the fence (the ravine next to Heritage Harbor garage), then that's ok. That's city property (and extremely junky d/t homeless, past road-widenings, the garage const, etc.....

Drop me a line.
